Discover the frontiers of new knowledge with NDSU’s data science degree

NDSU’s data science degree program provides you with the skills needed for success in today’s data-driven world.

Jointly offered by the Departments of Computer Science, Statistics and the College of Business, the curriculum covers statistical and computational techniques as well as business analytics.

“Data science is an interdisciplinary field that uses statistics, computer science and domain knowledge to extract insights from data. It basically involves collecting, cleaning, analyzing and interpreting data to solve problems, make predictions and support decision-making,” said Simone Ludwig, professor and chair of the computer science department.

“Data science is important because it enables organizations to make informed decisions, solve complex problems and drive innovation through actionable insights,” Ludwig said.

Within the data science program, you can choose from one of four tracks: artificial intelligence, statistical data analytics, business analytics or the generalist track, which covers topics from all tracks.

Christopher Dick, a sophomore data science major with an AI track, said the program has taught him many valuable skills. Among those include learning industry-standard programming languages like Python, R and SQL.

“It’s been challenging, but it's been a lot of fun and I've learned a lot of things. I really enjoy my classes this year, especially the database systems class,” said Dick, who is from Hayfield, Minnesota.

The faculty in the computer science department have been instrumental in Dick’s education, providing all the guidance and support he’s needed along the way.

“The faculty here have been really nice. Their office hours are very helpful and they’re always open to questions,” Dick said. “They’re always stopping throughout their lectures to see if anyone has any questions and making sure the students are following along.”

Dick said he is looking forward to gaining experience with more programming languages and utilizing what he’s learned outside of class as he progresses through the program.

Upon completing the degree students have expertise in statistical analysis, programming and data-driven problem-solving. They are ready to enter industries, including finance, healthcare, technology and government. With a data science degree, you can enter a career as a data analyst, data scientist, business intelligence analyst and machine learning scientist.

When not in class, Dick is heavily involved on campus in Greek Life and in Student Government where he currently serves as the Student Body Vice President. Dick also serves as an engineering ambassador within the College of Engineering, is involved in various student organizations and has even started his own bowling club.

Campus involvement has helped Dick build connections with peers outside of his program and has allowed him to make the most out of his college experience.

Dick highly recommends NDSU because of the in-depth, hands-on curriculum you will receive, as well as the strong sense of community.

“NDSU is a great place,” Dick said. “Both my sister and I chose to attend for different majors. Outside of the curriculum and learning a lot of new things, I get to try out a lot of clubs. There’s a lot of opportunities for growth academically, professionally and for the fun aspect of college.”
